Beautifully and Wonderfully Made

made |mād| adjective [usually in combination] made or formed in a particular place or by a particular process: You are made in the image of God.

As women, we can be so hard on ourselves when it comes to our bodies. No matter what we look like, we all struggle with comparison and each of us have things we are insecure about and would change if we could. But Psalm 139 tells us that we were created by God, knit together beautifully and perfectly by Him–and despite what we think some days, He doesn’t make mistakes.

“You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous–how well I know it!” Psalm 139:13-14

Our bodies are a gift from God and 1 Corinthians Chapter 6 tells us that they are the temple of the Holy Spirit. This truth should definitely give us a new perspective on how to take care of ourselves. I enjoy working out and eating healthy foods, but when we realize that we’ve been given a beautiful gift and sacred temple for the Holy Spirit to reside in–it should make us really want to love and take care of ourselves!

"Don't you realize that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit, who lives in you and was given to you by God? You do not belong to yourself, for God bought you with a high price. So you must honor God with your body." 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

In this verse, Paul is encouraging the church of Corinth to remain sexually pure. But as he reminds the church that their bodies are a temple of the Holy Spirit, he is making a strong point to take care of ourselves physically. Our "body" includes our mind, our spirit, our heart, and our emotions–our physical bodies hold all of these things together!

“Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God — this is your true and proper worship.” Romans 12:1

Choosing to love our bodies and the unique attributes, gifts, and abilities God gave each of us isn’t always easy when we are struggling with our self-worth. But God doesn’t make mistakes and He didn’t make one with you.

I’m praying that each of us will learn to love ourselves today and to see ourselves the way God does–beautifully and wonderfully made.
